This page is still being created. I will soon have information about humane trapping, spay & neutering, and releasing feral cats. Also about how you can help if you can not adopt a new pet, but perhaps you could foster a cat or dog while they are waiting for a new home.
The best thing for someone who wants to help cats, dogs, and other small animals is to contact their local animal shelters. You can volunteer your time possibly as a foster pet parent, working in the shelter, adoption fairs on the weekends, or doing humane trapping of which I only advise for non-kill shelters or shelters that will release the animal a few days after the spay or neuter. Don't trap just to euthanize unless the animal is very sick and suffering and can not be cured. I don't believe in "killing" another life.
- Compassionate Living,
there are many ways you can also help animals by making some small changes in your shopping by purchasing products that have not been tested on animals.
LeapingBunny.org will provide you with a list of companies that do not test finished products, ingredients, or formulations on animals.
Please also read about the two charities below and visit their sites.
- Puerto Rico,
has a severe problem with an over population of homeless dogs and cats. Please visit:
The Save A Sato Foundation. is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for homeless and abused animals on the island of Puerto Rico. Many of these animals live each day awaiting their untimely death whether it be from starvation, disease, injury or abuse. The Save A Sato Foundation needs passengers who will be departing from the San Juan airport and traveling to the Boston area and New England states. The only thing required from you is that you would simply be "assigned" an airline kennel containing a rescued Sato to your reservation as a piece of your luggage. They will have all the paper work and dog (Sato)ready at the San Juan airport and a receiving shelter staff will be at your destination point to receive and take possession of the Sato. You also can adopt the dog yourself as well.
(Unfortunately due to Sep. 11, some airlines my apply stricter rules on flying the dogs out of Puerto Rico.)
- Ireland,
as with many other countries is not current compared to the United States with spaying and neutering cats and dogs. Albert who works with
Irish Animal Care. is dedicated to helping the cats and dogs of Ireland. Sometimes he travels by train and ferry to the UK bringing kittens to new homes. If you would like to contribute please contact Albert I am sure he could use your help. My concern for homeless pets in Ireland is that it is so cold and wet for most of the months there.
The photo below is of a mother and her four kittens that Albert rescued.
The mother cat Purdy got a home near Dublin and the kittens were adopted to homes in the UK
